The plate flange and webbing is chalked.  When the new pin block is fit onto the chalked plate, the blue chalk will be transferred back onto the pin block marking the "high points".  Then the blue chalk marks are sanded and filed off and the block is set back onto the plate flange to mark the next "high point".  This process is repeated until the new pin block fits like a glove.
